Clarity before complexity
Before layering on complex analysis or models, financial statements exist to make reality legible. Software can produce reports, but judgment comes from understanding how performance, cash, and structure relate—and where they diverge.
Income Statement — Performance
- Reveals whether the business is profitable over time
- Matters because earnings without cash are fragile
- Watch for profits driven by non-operating activity
Cash Flow Statement — Liquidity
- Reveals how cash actually moves through the business
- Matters because cash, not earnings, funds operations and growth
- Watch for investment needs that aren’t supported by operating cash flow
Balance Sheet — Structure
- Reveals how the business is financed at a point in time
- Matters because leverage determines resilience under stress
- Watch for dependence on debt versus equity
